Why Am I Suddenly Reacting to Everything? The Hidden Story Behind Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

“I feel like my world keeps getting smaller.”


A patient said those words to me recently, and they have stayed with me ever since.


She wasn’t talking about depression.

She was talking about her life.

Restaurants had become impossible. A friend’s perfume triggered an instant migraine. A glass of wine left her flushed with a racing heart. The supplements everyone else seemed to tolerate made her feel worse. Even healthy leftovers caused stomach pain and hives.

She had seen multiple specialists. She had undergone imaging, blood work, allergy testing, and more.

Most of it was “normal.”

More than once she was told it was probably anxiety.

But something else was happening.

Her immune system had become stuck in survival mode.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something: you’re not imagining your symptoms, and you’re certainly not alone.


One condition that can create this confusing collection of symptoms is Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)—a disorder that many people have never heard of, yet one I see with increasing frequency in functional medicine.


When Your Body Starts Reacting to Everyday Life

One of the most frustrating things about MCAS is that the reactions don’t make sense.

You may suddenly react to:

  • Foods you’ve eaten your entire life

  • Perfumes, candles, or cleaning products

  • Heat or cold

  • Exercise

  • Alcohol

  • Stress

  • Hormonal changes

  • New supplements or medications

  • Insect bites

  • Weather changes

One day you’re fine.

The next day your body seems to react to everything.

Many patients tell me they feel like they’re becoming allergic to the world around them.

That’s a frightening feeling.


What Are Mast Cells?

Mast cells are specialized immune cells that act like your body’s security guards.

They live almost everywhere—your skin, digestive tract, lungs, bladder, blood vessels, reproductive organs, and even alongside your nerves.

Their job is incredibly important.

When they detect a genuine threat, such as an infection, parasite, toxin, or injury, they release chemical messengers that help protect you and coordinate an immune response.

In other words, mast cells are supposed to protect you.

The problem isn’t that they’re doing their job.

The problem is that, in some people, they begin responding to things that aren’t actually dangerous.


A Smoke Alarm That Became Too Sensitive

One of the easiest ways to understand MCAS is to think about the smoke alarm in your home.

A properly functioning smoke alarm should go off when there’s a real fire.

Imagine if it started blaring every time someone toasted bread, lit a candle, or took a hot shower.

The alarm isn’t broken because it’s making noise.

It’s become too sensitive.

That’s what happens with mast cells.

Instead of responding only to genuine threats, they begin reacting to everyday exposures that shouldn’t require an emergency response.


Why Do Symptoms Show Up Everywhere?

Because mast cells live throughout the body, MCAS can affect almost every organ system.

Symptoms may include:

Skin

  • Flushing

  • Itching

  • Hives

  • Rashes

  • Dermatographia (skin that welts easily)


Digestive System

  • Bloating

  • Nausea

  • Acid reflux

  • Diarrhea

  • Cramping

  • New food sensitivities


Heart and Blood Vessels

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Palpitations

  • Lightheadedness

  • Blood pressure fluctuations


Brain and Nervous System

  • Brain fog

  • Headaches

  • Anxiety

  • Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells

  • Dizziness


Respiratory System

  • Nasal congestion

  • Wheezing

  • Throat tightness

  • Shortness of breath


Whole Body

  • Fatigue

  • Joint pain

  • Temperature intolerance

  • Feeling “inflamed” without a clear explanation


If you’ve wondered why your symptoms seem completely unrelated, this is one reason.

They’re not random.

They’re connected by the same immune cells.


Why So Many People Are Told Everything Looks Normal

One of the hardest parts of living with MCAS is that routine testing often doesn’t provide clear answers.

Many patients hear things like:

“Your blood work looks normal.”

“Your scans are fine.”

“Maybe it’s stress.”

That can leave people feeling dismissed or questioning themselves.

While there are specialized tests that may support the diagnosis in certain situations, mast cell mediators are often released in short bursts and may return to normal by the time blood is drawn. For that reason, the pattern of symptoms and a careful clinical evaluation are often just as important as laboratory testing.

A normal routine workup doesn’t necessarily mean nothing is wrong.

Sometimes it means we haven’t yet asked the right questions.


You’re Not Crazy—Your Symptoms Deserve an Explanation


One of the things I hear most often from patients is this:

“I used to eat anything.”

“I never reacted to perfume before.”

“I don’t recognize my own body anymore.”


Those experiences deserve to be taken seriously.

Whether the answer turns out to be MCAS, histamine intolerance, another inflammatory condition, or something else entirely, your symptoms are your body’s way of telling us that something has changed.


Our job isn’t simply to quiet those signals.

Our job is to understand why they’re happening.


Looking Beyond the Symptoms
